I have a wonderful friend Lilly, who the first time we met learned that I was new on the dating scene. I was 50 at the time and she was over 60. She immediately gave me her best advice. “Always keep lube and condoms in your purse.” I knew we would be great friends from that and I followed the instructions right away!
Sex as an older woman does mean lubrication. It is natural that our vagina’s become dryer with age. It may vary, some days excitement will produce the expected wetness and other times it does not. Keep in mind that it may have nothing to do with you level of excitement.
Lubrication can be most anything that stays slick. Use caution, products that contain alcohol will sting.
Silicone based – these are long lasting. Silicone is not absorbed by the body.
Glycerin based – may feel sticky afterwards. It is also made from petroleum. K-Y Brand Jelly falls into this category. As do many of the ones you will find in the pharmacy. These lubes are very slick and can make intercourse fun and easy.
Oils – coconut, walnut, olive, peach pit, these oils from your kitchen will work. If used in excess they will grease stain your sheets. But very natural and easy to come by. These are also edible – a bonus.
Water based – Glycerin free, better for both of you. And works well with sex toys.
Yam based – As a fan of Grace and Frankie a netflix series. Frankie makes her own Yam lube. It is edible of course and gives the needed lubrication. Yam is often an ingredient in bio-identical hormone treatments. It may have positive hormonal effects – let me know your experiences.
Lubes can come in flavors, with added tingle, or scented. They have lube that heats up or cools down. Explore with yourself or your partner the possibilities.
If you are sensitive try one that desensitizes. It may numb the area, but there are many ways to orgasm beyond intercourse. This can help you add pleasure for your partner while not gritting your teeth or feeling anxious. It seems that most of the desensitizers are sold with anal sex in mind. Use it for that if you wish, but read the information and see if it won’t also work well for the vagina.
Finally, when using a lube with your sex toys always read the instructions. The toy itself may mention if a certain tube of lube should not be used with it. Mainly this is to help the toy’s outside from losing integrity.
Have fun! Lubes are inexpensive and a great way to add novelty to your sex play.
